Modelling Overcurrent Protection Relay Using PSCAD at Pencawang Masuk Utama Jasin

Abstract

Electricity is an important resource in modern life, providing numerous benefits to humanity. However, its mismanagement can lead to significant damage to both people and equipment. Efficient electrical protection is essential to mitigate potential harm. The most severe consequences include equipment explosions and fatalities due to excessive current. Ensuring the reliability, sensitivity, and selectivity of overcurrent relays is vital to prevent such incidents.
Setting the Time Multiplier Setting (TMS) and pickup current for overcurrent relays is a critical task. It requires a careful balance to ensure the relay operates reliably without disrupting the flow of electrical supply to consumers. Achieving this balance is essential for the safety of both equipment and people. Given the inherent dangers of high voltage, practical experimentation is not suitable. Therefore, simulation tools like PSCAD are preferred. PSCAD offers a controlled and accurate environment for testing overcurrent relay settings, eliminating external disturbances such as dust or mechanical losses. This approach allows for precise adjustments to TMS and pickup currents, ensuring the overcurrent relay operates effectively, minimizing the risk of damage and maintaining a stable power supply to consumers
